Presentation

A male patient in his early 60s with bronchiectasis presented with an occasionally productive chronic cough, solid food dysphagia and laryngeal signs of laryngopharyngeal reflux. During bronchoscopy, thick mucus was observed in bilateral lung fields, and bronchial washings were collected for aerobic bacterial culture. Light growth of normal respiratory flora was observed on chocolate and blood agar plates. However, heavy growth of grey colonies was observed on the chocolate plate only. The potential pathogen was identified via MALDI-TOF MS, and a rapid test for beta-lactamase was performed.
